Functional assessment

Functional assessment platform for business roles

Thirteen role assessments, already built, covering sales, marketing, HR, finance, procurement, supply chain, product and delivery. Copy one into your account, cut it down to what you need, and send it.

No credit card required

Technical roles get tested. Everyone else gets interviewed.

Nobody hires a backend engineer without seeing them work through a problem. Hire a procurement analyst, a finance analyst or an HR business partner and the process is usually a CV, two conversations and a reference - with no point at which anyone checks whether the person knows the work.

It is not that these roles are untestable. It is that building a fair test for one means knowing the function well enough to write forty good questions about it, and nobody has time to do that for every role they hire.

So the assessments already exist. You start from a finished one rather than a blank page.

The thirteen assessments

Built against the Dextes skills library, so each one is tied to the specific skills the role needs — which is also how the report comes back.

You get a question bank, and your own copy of it

These are not shared templates. When an assessment is distributed to you, a full copy is created inside your account. You own it. Delete questions, rewrite them, change the duration, add your own — none of it affects anyone else, and nothing is taken back.

Worth knowing before you send one: as built, each assessment runs at a minute a question, so the longest is two and a half hours. That is a bank, not a screening test. Candidates are served every question in the assessment, so cutting it down to the thirty or forty that matter for your hiring is the first thing to do with a new copy.

From picking a role to reading the result

1

Pick a role

Choose from the thirteen built assessments, or start from the skills library if your role is not one of them.

2

Make it yours

The assessment is copied into your account. Trim the bank, reword questions, set the duration and pass mark.

3

Send it

Invite candidates individually or import a list. Links can expire or be limited to a single use.

4

Read the breakdown

Scores are automatic. The report groups answers by skill, so you see which parts of the role someone actually knows.

Marked the moment it is submitted

Every question in the thirteen library assessments is multiple choice. That is a deliberate trade: no written answers means no marking queue, no AI grading step and no waiting — a result exists the moment a candidate finishes.

The report is not just a total. Answers are grouped by the skills their questions were tagged with, so a Procurement Analyst report tells you how someone did on category strategy separately from how they did on supplier management.

If you add written questions to your copy, those are graded by AI with its reasoning shown next to the score, and any score can be overridden. Answers the model could not grade confidently go to a review queue rather than being given a guessed score.

If your role is not one of the thirteen

The skills library the thirteen were built from covers the business functions in depth: customer and marketing, finance, supply chain, talent and HR, and cross-function strategy — 1,387 skills across those five areas, spanning 20 industries.

You can build an assessment by picking the skills a role needs, or by pasting the job description and letting Dextes draft a first set of questions from it. Anything generated is editable before you send it.

Hiring for technical roles too? The technical assessment page covers cloud, data, security and platform skills, and the developer page covers coding questions and the in-browser editor.

Assessment integrity controls

Assessments can enforce a time limit on the server, record tab switches against the attempt, warn a candidate when it happens, and optionally submit automatically once a threshold is crossed. Copy and paste, right-click and full-screen exit can each be restricted, and links can be set to expire or to work only once.

What there is not: no webcam recording, screen recording or identity verification. If your process requires supervised proctoring, Dextes is not a substitute for it.

Common questions

What is a functional assessment?

An assessment of the knowledge a specific business role runs on, rather than general aptitude or coding ability. A procurement analyst is tested on category strategy and supplier management; a recruiter on screening, sourcing and recruiting analysis. The questions are about the work, not about reasoning puzzles.

Do I have to build the questions myself?

Not for the thirteen roles in the library. Those arrive already built, with between 44 and 154 questions each. You can also build your own from the skills library or from a job description, and most customers end up doing both.

Can I edit the ready-made assessments?

Yes, completely. Distribution puts a full copy in your own account - it is yours, not a shared template. You can delete questions, rewrite them, change the duration and pass mark, and add your own. Editing your copy never affects anyone else.

How are they graded?

Every question in the thirteen library assessments is multiple choice, so they are graded automatically the moment a candidate submits. There is nothing to mark and no waiting. If you add written questions of your own, those are graded by AI with the reasoning shown, and you can override any score.

How long are they?

As shipped, one minute per question - so between 44 minutes and two and a half hours depending on the role. That is deliberately a full question bank rather than a finished test. Most teams cut theirs down to the thirty or forty questions that matter for their hiring, which is the first thing worth doing with a new copy.
